skin deep, bar soap, and a contest!
Skin Deep: I've been telling lots of people about Skin Deep, a fabulous resource from the Environmental Working Group for finding out about the health and beauty products you use. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just give you a great resource for information. The ingredients in these types of products aren't regulated, and there are some nasty things in many products. There are also better alternatives! You can search for information on specific products you use (there are over 25000 on the database), and browse products if you're looking for a low hazard item. Items are rated on a scale of 1-10, and when you click on an item, you can read the explanation for the rating. Definitely worth spending some time perusing! My goal is to have all products I use rated 5 or under.
Bar soap & contest: There's also an interesting article here about benefits of using bar soap rather than liquid. Would you like me to make you some? I haven't really gotten into many blogging contests yet, so perhaps it's time to do one myself. I've had a hankering to make a batch of soap (and I always like comments) - I'll draw three names from those who have commented on this post on or before this Friday, September 7. Those drawn will receive a complimentary bar of soap made by yours truly! Comments need to include something about the cosmetics products you use. I can't wait to see the comments!
PS- Speaking of comments, I've had a couple of people tell me they've had trouble commenting. If you click on 'comments' under any post, a window should pop up where you can type your comment in the empty box. If you don't have a blogger account, you can choose 'anonymous' and 'publish your comment'. That should do the trick!

Salut! I've been using the site and found out that most of the products I use should not come near my skin! Time for a change. Soap would be great as I am running out and it's the only safe product I use!
Thanks for the helpful links.
I checked Skin Deep and it's kind of scary! But I'm happy to report that the soap I use is A-OK (because it was made by either you or Annie). However, I am running out of homemade soap and would love to win some more!
Interesting! Scott loves liquid soap because it doesn't dry out his skin like most bar soaps do, however I'm not sure if he has tried yours. I am (still) using the one I got at your baby shower. I'm sure it's a lot healthier than those factory-made ones with ingredients you can't pronounce.
I will have to check out that site. I have very dry, sensitive skin (though not sure what I'm sensitive to!) and find cetaphil works wonders on my face, however am a little put off by all the words in the ingredients list I can't for the life of me pronounce! I would love to be in the draw to win some of your soap :)
Wow! I had no idea that the products that I've been using were so scary! The packaging can be so deceptive, claiming to use 'natural' ingredients, which only serve to distract you from the unpronouncable ones. I'll have to start making my own soap, but until then I'd love to win some of yours!
Oh, thank you for the link! Once we decided to try to have our little guy I pretty much stopped using all cosmetics but you don't often think about the next level of gunk... All of these unknown chemicals are a bit insidious in our lives, aren't they? Perhaps I'll have to start with our own soaps too (I've determined that once our laundry soap runs out it's homemade from here on out!).
Hi! I hope I'm not too late! I looked at the Skin Deep site briefly. It is clear to me that I am going to have to find a new shampoo! Your soap looks beautiful. ~Lauren
